  • 03 JULY 2011 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A woman in Bangkok holds up some of Yingluck Shinawatra's campaign literature after the Pheu Thai party and Yingluck Shinawatra won the Thai elections Sunday night. Yingluck Shinawatra and the Pheu Thai Party scored a massive landslide win in the Thai election Sunday. Pheu That is estimated to have won more than 300 seats in Thailand 500 seat parliament, so they won an absolute majority and could govern without having to form a coalition with minor parties. Pheu Thai is the latest incarnation of deposed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's political party. Yingluck is his youngest sister. Many observers expect legal challenges to the Pheu Thai victory and the election does not completely resolve Thailand's difficult political history of the last five years. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

The signs are a play on words because Yingluck's nickname is "Pu" and pu is also the Thai word for crab. About 150 members of the so called "White Mask" movement marched through the central shopping district of Bangkok Sunday to call for the resignation of Yingluck Shinawatra, the Prime Minister of Thailand. The White Mask protesters are strong supporters of the Thai monarchy. Thailand's military-appointed National Legislative Assembly began impeachment hearings Friday against former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. If she is convicted, she could be forced to stay out of politics for five years. During her defense, Yingluck questioned the necessity of her impeachment, saying, "I was removed from office, the equivalent of being impeached, three times already, I have no position left to be impeached from." A decision on her impeachment is expected by the end of January. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

Hundreds of thousands of Thais gathered in Bangkok Sunday in a series of protests against the caretaker government of Yingluck Shinawatra. The protests are a continuation of protests that started in early November and have caused the dissolution of the Pheu Thai led government of Yingluck Shinawatra. Protestors congregated at home of Yingluck and launched a series of motorcades that effectively gridlocked the city. Yingluck was not home when protestors picketed her home. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 03 JULY 2011 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: YINGLUCK SHINAWATRA, (seated) the Prime Minister elect of Thailand, is flanked by her advisors while she announces her victory in the Thai elections during a press conference Sunday night. If her election holds she will be the first woman elected Prime Minister of Thailand.

  • 10 MAY 2014 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A Red Shirt supporter with a photo of ousted and exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra cheers for ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra (Yingluck is Thaksin's sister) at a rally in Bangkok. Thousands of Thai Red Shirts, members of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), members of the ruling Pheu Thai party and supporters of the government of ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra are rallying on Aksa Road in the Bangkok suburbs. The government was ousted by a court ruling earlier in the week that deposed Yingluck because the judges said she acted unconstitutionally in a personnel matter early in her administration. Thailand now has no functioning government. Red Shirt leaders said at the rally Saturday that any attempt to impose an unelected government on Thailand could spark a civil war. This is the third consecutive popularly elected UDD supported government ousted by the courts in less than 10 years. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 14 JULY 2013 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: Thai White Mask protesters hold up pictures of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand, (right) and his wife, Queen Sirikit during a White Mask protest. About 150 members of the so called "White Mask" movement marched through the central shopping district of Bangkok Sunday to call for the resignation of Yingluck Shinawatra, the Prime Minister of Thailand. The White Mask protesters are strong supporters of the Thai monarchy. They claim that Yingluck is acting as a puppet for her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was deposed by a military coup in 2006 and now lives in exile in Dubai.
