  • 18 NOVEMBER 2017 - YANGON, MYANMAR: Women at Sule Pagoda in central Yangon. Pope Francis is visiting Myanmar, September 27-30. It will be the first visit by a Pope to the overwhelmingly Buddhist nation. He will meet with the Aung San Suu Kyi and other political leaders and will participate in two masses in Yangon. The Pope is expected to talk about Rohingya issue while he is in Myanmar. The Rohingya are persecuted Muslim minority in Rakhine state in western Myanmar. It's not clear how Myanmar's politically powerful nationalist monks will react if the Pope openly talks about the Rohingya. In the past, the monks have led marches and demonstrations against foreign diplomatic missions when foreign ambassadors have spoken in defense of the Rohingya. There is not much visible sign of the Pope's imminent visit in Yangon, which is estimated to be more than 90% Buddhist. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 06 NOVEMBER 2015 - YANGON, MYANMAR: Men listen to the speakers at the final NDF election rally of the 2015 election. The rally was held in central Yangon, next to the historic Sule Pagoda and across the street from Yangon city hall. The National Democratic Force (NDF) was formed by former members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) who chose to contest the 2010 general election in Myanmar because the NLD boycotted that election. There have been mass defections from the NFD this year because many of the people who joined the NFD in 2010 have gone back to the NLD, which is contesting this year’s election and widely expected to win it. Campaigning in the Myanmar election ended Friday. People go to the polls Sunday. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 06 NOVEMBER 2015 - YANGON, MYANMAR: NDF officials clasp hands at the end of the final NDF election rally of the 2015 election.

Yangon buses are generally overcrowded and in poor repair but as the economy improves newer, but still used, Japanese and Korean buses are being imported. Hundreds of bus routes criss-cross Yangon, providing the cheapest way of getting around the city. Most fares are less than the equivalent of .20¢ US. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

The Burmese newspaper industry has enjoyed explosive growth this year after private ownership was allowed in 2013.
