  • 11 JANUARY 2021 - DES MOINES, IOWA: A family in the Rotunda of the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. Hundreds of Iowans from across the state came to the State Capitol to protest the Governor's COVID-19 mitigation efforts. The Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) mitigation guidelines include a mask mandate indoors when it isn't possible to social distance. But the Governor specifically exempted the State Capitol. No one in the crowd wore a mask and there was no effort to follow "social distancing" guidelines. There were also "anti-Vaxxers" in the crowd who protested the vaccine efforts and said vaccines were unsafe. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 12 JUNE 2020 - DES MOINES, IOWA: An Iowa State Trooper leads a member of the Governor's staff through Black Lives Matter supporters participating in a protest in the rotunda of the Iowa capitol. About 75 activists from Black Lives Matter came to the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines Friday to talk to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. They've been trying to meet with Gov. Reynolds all week. She made time for them Friday and met with 5 representatives of the organization without any media in the room. They wanted to talk to her about police violence against African-Americans and racial disparities in Iowa's justice system. While the 5 met with the Governor, the remaining activists picketed the hall in front of her office and chanted. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ
