  • 03 AUGUST 2012 - GILBERT, AZ: MATT SALMON, (left) and WIL CARDON campaign with Republican voters in Gilbert, AZ, Friday. Cardon, a wealthy businessman, is running in the Republican primary for the US Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jon Kyl. He is running against long serving Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who currently represents Arizona's 6th Congressional District, a conservative, largely Mormon, district in the suburbs of Phoenix. Both Cardon and Flake are active Mormons and both men are running as "Tea Party" inspired conservatives. Whoever wins the August 28 primary will face Dr. Richard Carmona in November's general election. Salmon is running in the Republican primary for Arizona's 5th Congressional District. Salmon previously served in Congress from 1994 until 2000. CD5 is a primarily Republican district, with a large number of conservative Mormons, in the suburbs east of Phoenix. Salmon is running against Kirk Adams, a former Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives. Whoever wins the August 28 Republican primary will probably win in November's general election. Schweikert faced Congressman Ben Quayle in what was the hardest Republican primary election in Arizona in 2012. Both were incumbent Republican freshmen elected to Congress from neighboring districts in 2010. They ended up in the same district at the end of the redistricting process and faced off against each other in the primary to represent Arizona's 6th Congressional District, which is made up of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and parts of Phoenix.
