  • 26 JUNE 2011 - CHIANG MAI, THAILAND: People walk in the rain to absentee voting center in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Sunday. Absentee voting was Sunday, July 26 in Thailand's national election. The regular voting is Sunday July 3. In Chiang Mai, center of the powerful Red Shirt opposition movement and their legal party Pheua Thai, turnout was heavy despite a steady rain. Thailand's democracy will be tested in the election, which is the most bitterly fought contest in Thai political history. The Pheua Thai represents people loyal to fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted by a military coup in 2006. The ruling Democrats have governed Thailand in one form or another nearly continuously since 1932. Pre-election polls show Pheua Thai leading but not by enough to rule without forming a coalition with smaller parties. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 21 JULY 2013 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A young man's family cuts his hair under an umbrella during a rain before he became ordained as a Buddhist monk at Wat Benchamabophit on the first day of Vassa, the three-month annual retreat observed by Theravada monks and nuns. Men frequently enter the monastery and become monks for Vassa. On the first day of Vassa (or Buddhist Lent) many Buddhists visit their temples to "make merit." During Vassa, monks and nuns remain inside monasteries and temple grounds, devoting their time to intensive meditation and study. Laypeople support the monastic sangha by bringing food, candles and other offerings to temples. Laypeople also often observe Vassa by giving up something, such as smoking or eating meat. For this reason, westerners sometimes call Vassa the "Buddhist Lent." PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

Most Burmese farmers still use oxen and water buffalo to work their fields. After decades of military mismanagement that led to years of rice imports, Myanmar (Burma) is on track to become one of the world's leading rice exporters in the next two years and could challenge traditional rice exporter leader Thailand. Political and economic reforms have improved rice yields and new mills are being built across the country. Burmese eat more rice than any other people in the world. The average Burmese consumes 210 kilos of rice per year and rice makes up 75 percent of the diet. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

The number of prostitutes is difficult to determine, estimates vary widely. Since the Vietnam War, Thailand has gained international notoriety among travelers from many countries as a sex tourism destination. One estimate published in 2003 placed the trade at US$ 4.3 billion per year or about three percent of the Thai economy. It has been suggested that at least 10% of tourist dollars may be spent on the sex trade. • 26 JUNE 2011 - CHIANG MAI, THAILAND: A man drops his absentee ballot in the ballot box during absentee voting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Sunday.
