  • 17 DECEMBER 2018 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: Shoppers use an airconditioned walkway to go from Siam Discovery Mall to Siam Center Mall, both upscale malls in central Bangkok. According to Credit Suisse Global Wealth Databook 2018, which surveyed 40 countries, Thailand has the highest rate of income inequality in the world. In 2016, Thailand was third, behind Russia and India. In 2016, the 1% richest Thais (about 500,000 people) owned 58.0% of the Thailand's wealth. In 2018, they controlled 66.9%. In Russia, those numbers went from 78% in 2016, down to 57.1% in 2018. The Thai government disagreed with the report and said the report didn't take government anti-poverty programs into account and that Thailand was held to an unfair standard because most of the other countries in the report are developed countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The food distribution was organized by Farmers to Families and the YMCA. They had 1,000 boxes of emergency rations which included fresh fruit and vegetables, yogurt, chicken and hot dogs. They also had 1,000 gallons of milk. The neighborhood around the YMCA is a "food desert," with no nearby grocery stores that sell healthy food. Food bank use in Iowa is up more than 60% since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic. Food bank officials estimate that 4 in 10 users are new users of emergency food pantries. • 16 SEPTEMBER 2020 - MITCHELLVILLE, IOWA: Volunteers set up the food pantry at Heritage Word of Life Church. There is no grocery store in Mitchellville, a small community in eastern Polk County. It doesn't qualify as a "food desert" under USDA guidelines because there are grocery stores within 10 miles in neighboring communities, but based on state data, Mitchellville is the poorest community in Polk County (which includes the Des Moines metropolitan area). The Mitchellville zip code has the lowest per capita income in Polk County. Many people don't own cars and can't get to neighboring communities to buy groceries. The library in Mitchellville has made arrangements with a neighboring community to serve hot meals. Every day someone from the Mitchellville library picks up hot meals from a nearby town and distributes them in the library. Heritage Word of Life, a church across the street from Library, has a food pantry in their Fellowship Room where people can pick up fresh vegetables, staples, and hygiene needs. • 01 SEPTEMBER 2020 - ADEL, IOWA: BRUCE THORSEN, right, a volunteer with Eat Greater Des Moines, picks pears from a tree on the side of a rural highway. Volunteers from Eat Greater DSM gleaned pears at the Dallas County Human Services Campus. The pears will be distributed to Des Moines emergency pantries, community centers, and churches. Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or gathering crops from fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. It is an ancient tradition first described in the Hebrew Bible. A spokesperson for Eat Greater DSM said need has skyrocketed this year. In a normal year, they distribute about 300,000 pounds of food. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, they've distributed more than 500,000 pounds of food. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ
