14 SEPTEMBER 2020 - WINTERSET, IOWA: Tourists walk through the Hogback Bridge. The bridge is closed to vehicles. The Hogback Bridge in Madison County was built in 1884. The covered bridges of Madison County are an enduring tourist attraction more than 25 years after the book and movie "The Bridges of Madison County" made them famous. There are six covered bridges in Madison County, all built in the 1800s. They are remnants of about 100 covered bridges built in Iowa from the 1850s through the late 1800s. Most of the briges were washed away in floods, condemned, or destroyed in fires. The Madison County bridges have been restored and rebuilt through the years. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ
