25 MAY 2020 - ROLAND, IOWA: LARRY RITLAND and GLENN KAPPELMANN walk through Roland Cemetery, in Roland, Iowa, a farming community an hour north of Des Moines. Ritland, a Vietnam era veteran, rode his bicycle about 74 miles through central Iowa to honor veterans buried in cemeteries in rural Iowa. In 2020, most public Memorial Day events in Iowa were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but some families had their own private events. Memorial Day is a federal holiday to honori and mourn the military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May.
