19 JUNE 2021 - DES MOINES, IOWA: Bishop M.D. EPPRIGHT and SANDRA EPPRIGHT of Faith Tabernacle Church of God in downtown Des Moines, walk through the Juneteenth celebration in Des Moines. They were wearing tee shirts with their Covid vaccination status. Juneteenth marks the day, after the Civil War, that slaves in Texas learned that they were free. Slaves in Texas were freed when Union army General Gordon Granger captured Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3 proclaiming freedom for slaves held in Texas. Juneteenth has been celebrated in the Black community for more than 100 years. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act making it a federal holiday.
