Apr. 14 - Bangkok, Thailand: People bathe a Buddha statue at Wat Chanasongkram in Bangkok during Songkran (Thai New Year) Wednesday. Bathing images of the Buddha, with either water or special oils, is an important merit making activity during Songkran. The more recent tradition of throwing water at people evolved from the tradition of bathing the Buddha. Despite the political violence that has gripped Thailand in recent days, traditional Thai New Year, also known as Songkran, observances are taking place at temples throughout Bangkok.
