10 OCTOBER 2010 - PHOENIX, AZ: JUAN JAUREGUI, from Phoenix, AZ, portrayed Juan Diego during a procession in Phoenix, AZ, Sunday. Juan Diego is the Mexican peasant who first saw the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1531 in what is now Mexico City. About 500 people processed through downtown Phoenix Sunday afternoon to honor the Virgin of Guadalupe, the "Queen of the Americas." The procession was accompanied by 12 Matachine dance troupes. The Matachines are an important part of Mexican Catholic culture. They represent the battle of Good vs. Evil and the protect the Virgin from malevolent forces, represented by the demon like figures who accompany the dancers. Photo by Jack Kurtz
