Juneteenth

19 JUNE 2021 - DES MOINES, IOWA: People participate in an exercise class at the Juneteenth celebration in downtown Des Moines. Juneteenth marks the day, after the Civil War, that slaves in Texas learned that they were free. Slaves in Texas were freed when Union army General Gordon Granger captured Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3 proclaiming freedom for slaves held in Texas. Juneteenth has been celebrated in the Black community for more than 100 years. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act making it a federal holiday.
