According to legend, it was built before the Shwedagon Pagoda and is more than 2,500 years old. The Sule Pagoda has been the focal point of both Yangon and Burmese politics. The prison has been used largely to repress political dissidents. The prison is famous worldwide for its inhumane and dirty conditions, abusive techniques, and uses of mental and physical torture.
