Scenes of Kathmandu

Kathmandu is the capital and largest city in Nepal. It's an amalgam of several cities - Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan are the biggest but also Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi and numerous smaller communities. Nearly one million people live in the 49.45 square kilometres (19.09 sq mi) metropolitan area.

Parts of the stupa were badly damaged in the Nepal earthquake of 2015 but it is still open for religious devotees and tourists. Construction of the stupa started in the 1600s. Even though it is a Buddhist stupa, there are several Hindu shrines in the complex and Hindus come to the stupa to worship every day.  PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 31 JULY 2015 - KATHMANDU, NEPAL:  School children spin a prayer wheel in a Tibetan monastery near Bodhnath Stupa. Bodhnath Stupa in the Bouda section of Kathmandu is one of the most revered and oldest Buddhist stupas in Nepal. The area has emerged as the center of the Tibetan refugee community in Kathmandu. On full moon nights thousands of Nepali and Tibetan Buddhists come to the stupa and participate in processions around the stupa. The stupa was heavily damaged in the earthquake of 25 April 2015 and people are no longer allowed to climb on the stupa, now they walk around the base and pray with butter lamps.
