US Marine Corps Private Channing Whitaker joined the Marines at age 17 in 1942. He died less than a year later during the Battle of Tarawa in the South Pacific. His remains were recovered earlier this year, his identity confirmed by a DNA match with a family member, and his body returned to the US. On November 22, 2019, exactly 76 years after he died, he was reburied in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
