Friday, May 29, there was vigil in memory of George Floyd, the unarmed black man killed by Minneapolis police officers. About 1,000 people came out. After the vigil some people picketed the Des Moines police station. There have been protests against police violence across the country after the video of Minneapolis police officer killing Floyd was released.

US Marine Corps Private Channing Whitaker joined the Marines at age 17 in 1942. He died less than a year later during the Battle of Tarawa in the South Pacific. His remains were recovered earlier this year, his identity confirmed by a DNA match with a family member, and his body returned to the US. On November 22, 2019, exactly 76 years after he died, he was reburied in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

The Minnesota State Fair is one of the largest state fairs in the United States. It's called "the Great Minnesota Get Together" and includes numerous agricultural exhibits, a vast midway with rides and games, horse shows and rodeos. Nearly two million people a year visit the fair, which is located in St. Paul.

Well over 10,000 people marched to the State Capitol in St. Paul, MN, to support the sciences and fact based decision making. Organizers said the march was supposed to be non-partisan, but the emphasis on science and fact, politics were always just below the surface.

Prince died on April 21, 2016. On the one year anniversary of his death hundreds of people visited Paisley Park, his home/recording studio in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, to leave memorials for the music superstar.
