    Kathmandu is the capital and largest city in Nepal. It's an amalgam of several cities - Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan are the biggest but also Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi and numerous smaller communities. Nearly one million people live in the 49.45 square kilometres (19.09 sq mi) metropolitan area.

    Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu is one of the most important religious sites in Kathmandu. A historic market town on the spice trail between India and China, Boudhanath has been absorbed into Kathmandu. The Nepalese Buddhist community become a Tibetan Buddhist community, as Tibetans fleeing Chinese persecution moved to Nepal. On the full moon night of every month thousands of people make a pilgrimage to the Stupa for a procession around the sacred site.

    Tens of thousands of Nepalese are still homeless three months after the earthquake on April 25, 2015. More than 7,000 people, jammed into 1,800 tents still live in an IDP Camp on a barren patch of ground next to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, one of the most expensive hotels in Kathmandu.

    On April 25, 2015, Nepal was struck by a 7.8M earthquake. More than 9,000 people were killed and vast swaths of the mountainous country devastated. Many of the historic areas in the Kathmandu Valley were damaged and tens of thousands left homeless. These pictures were made in the Kathmandu Valley three months after the earthquake.
